Day 2 After Dinner Games

Published on March 18, 2011 by   ·   No Comments

Here is another block of four first round games that will start after the Dinner hour in the Eastern Timezone. The write-ups on this post will be a little shorter than the other ones today. This is because we got some blowouts upcoming once 7:00PM ET roles around. I’m going to stay away from betting on the spread against the first three matchups on this list because all of the betting for each of these games are all on the favorites.

1 Kansas vs 16 Boston U

boston-vs-kansasThe America East conference has one victory in the NCAA tournament all-time, by Vermont in 2005. Boston U is 0-4 in the NCAA tournament. Boston is currently a 22 1/2 point underdog. Kansas will probably win by more than 23 points. I’m going to guess that the score will be 90-65.

Kansas is 8-2 in the first round over the past 10 years. The Jayhawks last won the National Championship in 2008. Last year, the championship favorites lost in the 2nd round to 9 seed Northern Iowa. They lost in the Sweet 16 the year before to Michigan State. The Jawhawks did have won major upset loss to Bucknell as a 3 seed back in 2005.

2 North Carolina vs 15 Long Island

north-carolina-vs-long-islandThe North East Conference is 0-25 all-time in the NCAA tournament. This will be the Long Island Blackbirds first appearance. They dominated their conference but had a couple of very close games in their conference tournament.

UNC is obviously on another level. The Tarheels are 17 point favorites in this matchup. Considering the Long Island lost by 16 points to Northwestern, you would have to think the North Carolina will win by more than 17 points, wouldn’t you? I actually don’t think so. We saw with Oakland a high scoring team that made the game close at the end; I think we will see the same thing happen here. North Carolina wins 91-81.

3 Purdue vs 14 St Peter’s

st-peters-vs-purdueThis will be St Peter’s first trip to the NCAA tournament. The Metro Atlantic Athletics Conference (MAAC) is 5-27 in the tournament all-time and they have won 3 times in the past 10 years. Siena won as a 13 seed in 2008 and again as a 9 seed the next year.

Purdue has been a dominant team all year. They are a strong 3 seed and didn’t get a higher seed because the stumbled in their last two games. This included a surprise loss to Michigan State in their first conference tournament game. This is not a 3-14 matchup that has any chance of an upset. Purdue will win the game 73-61.

6 Xavier vs 11 Marquette

Here the only interesting game of the bunch. The Xavier Musketeers (24-7) will play against the Marquette Golden Eagles (20-14) a the East Region’s 6 vs 11 matchup. Marquette played their way into the tournament by beating winning their first two games in the Big East Conference tournament. They have played a brutal schedule and did not fair well against ranked teams going 3-9.

Xavier was the A-10 regular season conference champion and is currently ranked #20 in the nation. They lost a surprise game in the first round of the A-10 tournament against 8 seed Dayton. They have only played one ranked team and lost that game. The Musketeers have not played particularly well against better non-conference opponents.

xavier-vs-marquetteXavier is 7-2 in the first round of the NCAA tournament in the past 10 years including 4-0 in the last 4 years. They have gone to the Sweet 16 each of the past 3 NCAA tournaments. Marquette is 3-4 in first round games during that same time span. They have only won 2 NCAA tournament games since Dwayne Wade led them to the 2003 Final Four. Last year, they lost to 11 seed Washington in the first round; but they won their first round matchups in 2009 and 2008.

Marquette has the statistical advantage in just about every offensive category. Vegas has this game as a pick’em, so you can be sure that they want people to bet on the higher seed to win, yet only a little more than half are taking the bet. This has all the makings of a game that The Golden Eagles will win. I predict that the score will be 76-72.
