Last Four Games of the First Round

8 UNLV vs 9 Illinois

unlv-vs-illinoisIllinois started off the year well going 13-3 out of the gate including wins over UNC, Gonzaga, Wisconsin and an OT loss to Texas. Then they struggled mightily down the stretch and barely made it into the NCAA tournament. They are just 6-10 since mid-January.

UNLV has been on a roll and barely lost to San Diego State in the MWC tournament. They have won 6 of 7 and have beaten two ranked teams during the season.

The best sports gambling sites have installed UNLV as a 3 point favorite. I’m not going to bet the spread on this game, but I do think that the Running Rebels will win the matchup, 71-68.

7 Washington vs 10 Georgia

Isaiah Thomas and the 7th seeded Washington Huskies take on Trey Thompkins and the 10th seeded Georgia Bulldogs on Friday night in the NCAA Tournament. Thomas averaged 19.7 points and 10 assists per college basketball betting game as Washington won the Pac-10 tournament last week. He leads a Washington offense that was the third best in the nation.

Washington averaged 83.5 points per game this season and it is not only Thomas who can score. Senior forward Matt Bryan-Amaning averages 15.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. The Huskies will try and push the pace and run Georgia off the court. Georgia has a very good player in Thompkins but they know that they will have to slow the pace to win against Thomas and the Huskies. Georgia has a solid defense that allowed just 64.3 points per game this
NCAA tournament betting season.

washington-vs-georgiaThe one advantage for Georgia is their size. They have a good front line of Thompkins, Jeremy Price and Chris Barnes. The Bulldogs also have a good inside-outside combination with Thompkins on the inside and Travis Leslie on the outside.

The betting on this game has favored Washington as the Huskies are getting most of the action. Washington is a #7 seed but many people are picking them not only to win this game against Georgia but to upset #2 North Carolina in the next round.

Here are the betting stats for Friday’s game. Neither Washington nor Georgia was that great against the spread this season as the Huskies were 13-15 ATS this season while Georgia was 15-15-1 ATS. The Bulldogs are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games as an underdog. The Bulldogs are 4-16-1 ATS in their last 21 Friday games. The Bulldogs are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games. The Bulldogs are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games. The Huskies are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games. The Huskies are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 vs. the SEC. The Huskies are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 NCAA Tournament games.

The Under is 6-1 in the Bulldogs last 7 non-conference games. The Under is 4-1 in the Bulldogs last 5 overall. The Under is 5-1 in the Huskies last 6 overall.

Washington is currently a 5 point favorite in this 7-10 matchup. I am going to predict that the Huskies will win the game by the final score of 80-73.

6 Georgetown vs 11 VCU

georgetown-vs-vcuVCU won their opening round match in the First Four against USC in convincing fashion, silencing the critics that said they didn’t belong in the NCAA tournament. Now they get a real test in the Georgetown Hoyas. VCU won in the 2007 NCAA tournament as an 11 seed but lost in 2009 (also as an 11 seed)

Georgetown had a very good up until the end of the regular season. They lost 4 in a row and 5 of 6 to stumble into the NCAA tournament. That being said, they did lose to 5 teams in that made the tournament. Georgetown has to get the monkey off of their back after they lost to Ohio in the first round as a 3 seed last year. That is the only first round loss that they have had in their last 5 tournament trips.

Georgetown is favored by 5 1/2 points. I’m not going to take this spread either way, but the Hoyas will definitely win the game.

3 Syracuse vs 14 Indiana State

syracus-vs-indiana-stIt wasn’t too long ago that the MVC was able to get more then 1 team into the NCAA tournament and the conference has a respectable 8-12 record in the first round the past 10 years. However, this is no longer the case as teams like Missouri State and Wichita State have to watch from home (or the NIT). Indiana State won the conference title and won the automatic bid. They get to play the 3rd seed in the East, the Syracuse Orange.

This game is a complete mismatch statistically in just about every category. Syracuse is favored by 12 1/2 points and 80% of the bets are place on the Orange to beat the spread. I will agree with the nation and take Syracuse to beat the line, 75-59.
