Valero Alamo Bowl

alamo-bowl-logoThe Alamo Bowl is a bowl game that had traditionally matched up a Big 12 team against a Big 10 team. However, this format has changed and the Pac-12 has sent a team for the past two years.

This year we will see the Heisman trophy winner Robert Griffin III (RG3) as the Baylor Bears (9-3) will face off against the Washington Huskies (7-5). Kickoff will be on Wednesday December 29 at 9:15PM ET. You can view this game on ESPN or hear it on ESPN Radio.

The Alamo Bowl is hosted at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas as it has for each year since the bowl games inception in 1993.

For Washington, its another bowl matchup that they are a big underdog against a Big 12 team. They shocked the world last year as they beat a 13 points favorites in Nebraska. However, the story is very different as Baylor is not going to have the same let down that Nebraska did last year. Nebraska expected to be in a BCS game, whereas Baylor didn’t expect to be in a BCS game with their 4-3 start.

Baylor is on a roll; they have won 5 in a row and put up big wins against Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Texas. They put up some very big numbers in a conference that is dominated by high scoring. They started out the season with a game of the year candidate against TCU.

The Bears are also playing in their home state, so the crowd will be on their side. Baylor is 8-0 at home this year. Every game they played on the road they either lost or won in overtime. But, they don’t have to travel far at all. Waco is only about 150 miles away from San Antonio up the I-35 highway.

Washington has the opposite story. They have lost 4 out of their last 6 games. The only 2 wins are against teams that fired their head coach (Arizona and Washington State). They got throttled against the 4 great teams that they have played against this year. They also have to go all the way across the country to get to this bowl game in the heart of Texas. All of this spells bad news for the Huskies this time around.

Points For/GameBaylor: 43.5; Washington: 31.5
Points Against/GameBaylor: 35.7; Washington: 33.3
Offensive Yards/GameBaylor: 571.3; Washington: 392.3

Another year, another time that Washington makes a bowl game when they let up more points than they scored. Let’s be honest, both teams have poor to terrible defenses; both teams have defenses ranking in the bottom 5th of the nation. Why else do you think that the over/under for this game is 80? Did I read that right? 80! I wouldn’t touch that even though I think it will probably go over.

Just like Toledo did yesterday, Baylor is going to have the ability to score in bunches. That means even if Washington starts out hot, they aren’t going to be able to be comfortable with a lead. I do not believe that 60 points is out of the question for Baylor. It just depends on how the Huskies offense does to try to keep pace.

Prediction

Baylor is a 9 1/2 point favorite. This may be one of the games that I think may get out of hand early. That would mean that Baylor will easily cover. However, if Baylor’s defense doesn’t show up, it’s going to be a track meet. I actually like Washington to cover because of this. I have Baylor winning this matchup with the score of 42-35.

2010 Alamo Bowl

Previous Bowl Results

The Big 12 is 7-8 overall in the Alamo Bowl, playing each game against the Big 10 conference. The Pac-10 played in the first two Alamo Bowls and are 2-0.

Last year, Oklahoma State (9-3) lost to the Mississippi Rebels 21-7 in the Cotton Bowl. They are 12-8 in bowl games all time, but are 0-2 in the Alamo Bowl.

Arizona (8-4) got shut out last year by the Nebraska Cornhuskers (10-3) 33-0 in the Holiday Bowl. They have not fared as well in the bowl games with a 6-8-1 record all time.

Alamo Bowl Breakdown

RecordsOK State: 10-2; Arizona: 7-5
All Time Bowl RecordOK State: 12-8; Arizona: 6-8-1
Key WinsOK State: Tulsa 65-28, Texas A&M 38-35, Baylor 55-28; Arizona: Iowa 34-27,
Key LossesOK State: Nebraska 51-41, Oklahoma 47-41; Arizona: Staford 42-17, Oregon 48-29, Arizona State 30-29

This is one of the true mismatches on paper. The Cowboys have the 2nd overall passing yards and 3rd overall points for in the nation. Their games against their rivals have been high scoring and they have also been blowing teams out.

Meanwhile Arizona has been heading in the wrong direction. They did not play well against either of the top 2 teams and have lost a total of 4 straight games heading into the Alamo Bowl.

Points For/GameOK State: 44.9; Arizona: 29.8
Points Against/GameOK State: 27.8; Arizona: 21.6
Offensive Yards/GameOK State: 537.5; Arizona: 445

I don’t think that Arizona is that bad of a team; they just aren’t getting any breaks at all being matched up against Oklahoma State. Statistically, Arizona has a better defense, but not against the top-tier teams.

Oklahoma State has scored more than 40 points in 8 of their 12 games this season. I think that this is also going to be the case against Arizona.

Prediction

Because the Pac-10 only has 4 teams representing them in bowl games (5 would have qualified but USC is banned from bowl games for two years) and two of the four are in BCS Bowl games, Arizona and Washington are being matched up with much better teams overall.

Many teams from the Pac-10 had down years this year and did not make a bowl game. I predict that Oklahoma State will win this game 45-27.

Bowl Game Review

Arizona couldn’t muster any kind of real effort against the Cowboys and got smoked in the Alamo Bowl with the final score 36-10.
