Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Published on December 16, 2011 by   ·   No Comments

famous-idaho-potato-bowlHere’s our first bowl name change of the season. The Humanitarian Bowl has officially become the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Other than the title sponsor, little else has changed with this bowl game. It is still played on the blue turf at Boise State and the matchup is still WAC vs MAC.

This year’s matchup features the Utah State Aggies (7-5) vs the Ohio Bobcats (9-4). As with most early bowl games, it can be viewed on ESPN and heard on ESPN radio. The game will begin on Saturday at 5:30pm ET.

Utah State comes in with a very wild 7-5 record. They started the season with what should have been an upset of Auburn that was ripped away from them in the waning seconds. However, they have played some pretty rough games against some of the worst teams in the country with their 5 game winning streak that ended the season. The conference as a whole is pretty awful this year as they only got 3 bowl team eligible. That combined with a 2-5 start to the season makes me seriously doubt that they win this game.

It’s not that the MAC is head-and-shoulders the better conference; they are both near the bottom in conference strength. However, Ohio not only has the better record but they share a common opponent with Utah State: New Mexico State. Both teams played at New Mexico State with drastically different results. Ohio crushed the Aggies 44-24 and Utah State barely squeaked by 24-21.

Statistically speaking, the Ohio Bobcats are in the top 3rd of the nation in most offensive and defensive categories. Meanwhile, the Utah State Aggies struggle passing the ball and their defense ranks in the bottom half of the nation.

That’s why I’m going to cut this one a bit short and tell you that I’m sticking with my original prediction of Ohio 27-21.

Humanitarian Bowl

humanitarian-bowl-gameThe Humanitarian Bowl is going to be the second bowl game played in the 2010 bowl season. It is held annually on the blue turf of Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The mobile business application uDrove has become the title sponsor for this year’s Humanitarian Bowl.

The game will be played on Saturday, December 18 at 5:30PM ET (3:30PM MT). You can watch this game on ESPN or listen to it on ESPN Radio.

The first time this bowl game was played was in 1997. Back then, this game featured the champion of the Big West conference; but it now features a team from the Western Athletic Conference against a team in the Mid-American Conference. This year’s battle pits the North Illinois Huskies (10-3) against the Fresno State Bulldogs (8-4).

The Huskies come into the game after losing the MAC Championship game to Miami of Ohio. Before that, they were on a roll winning 9 in a row, some by convincing fashion. The only teams from major conferences that they have played have been close with Northern Illinois going 1-2 in those games.

The Bulldogs have beaten a common opponent that beat the Huskies, the Illinois Fighting Illini. Other than that, Fresno State has not looked good in several of their big games. Specifically, they put up no fight whatsoever in a 51-0 drubbing by Boise State. Normally I would say that because Fresno State is much closer than Northern Illinois is; but the Bulldogs might not get the warmest feeling of going back to Boise.

Which brings me to the weather. Whether will most certainly have a factor in this game because the current forecast for Saturday Afternoon calls for winter advisory for Boise. There is currently a 90% chance of snow for the hours around the entire game. Don’t be surprised if this turns into a snow bowl!

Previous Bowl Results

Northern Illinois lost in last year’s International Bowl against the South Florida Bulls 27-3. Both teams were 7-5 heading into this game. Fresno State lost last year in the New Mexico Bowl to the Wyoming Cowboys in 2 overtimes 35-28. Fresno was 8-4 and the Cowboys were 7-5 coming into the game.

Humanitarian Bowl Breakdown

RecordsNIU: 10-3; FSU: 8-4
All Time Bowl RecordNIU: 2-3; FSU: 10-9
Key WinsNIU: Eastern Michigan 71-3, Toledo 65-30, Minnesota 34-23; FSU: Illinois 25-23
Key LossesNIU: Iowa State 27-10, Illinois 28-22; FSU: Mississippi 55-38, Hawaii 49-27, BSU 51-0

I originally thought that Fresno State would win this game. With the weather potentially becoming a big factor in the game, it might come down the the running games of both teams. Fresno State has an adequate running game, but the Huskies are 7th in the nation at 265 yards a game.

One problem that I have with the Bulldogs is that they only have one of their 8 wins against a Division 1A opponent with a winning record and that made Illinois 6-6. They almost beat Nevada at home 35-34, but they didn’t.

This game may come down to who’s defense is better and in this case this is definitely go to Northern Iowa, who is giving up 10 points less a game.

Points For/GameNIU: 37.8; FSU: 30.0
Points Against/GameNIU: 19.1; FSU: 29.2
Offensive Yards/GameNIU: 446; FSU: 371

With all that being said, I’m going to select the Northern Illinois Huskies to win the Humanitarian bowl. I predict that the score of this game will be 24-17.

Bowl Game Review

Northern Illinois beat Fresno State by a score of 40-17 to win the Humanitarian Bowl. There was no snow during the game for some odd reason and the Huskies looked like the all-around better team in this matchup.
