Sheraton Hawaii Bowl

hawaii-bowl-logoThe Hawaii Bowl is sponsored by Sheraton and has been played since 2002. The bowl game is played at the University of Hawaii’s home field, Aloha Stadium.

This game is traditionally played on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and will usually feature a team from the Western Athletic Conference against a either a Pac-10 or Conference USA opponent. As part of the bowl agreement with the WAC, the University of Hawaii will receive a bid to this game as long as they are bowl eligible and don’t receive a BCS bowl bid.

This year the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (11-2) will play against the Nevada Wolfpack (7-5). This game will be played on Christmas Eve (Dec 24) at 8:00PM ET and can be watch on ESPN or listened to on ESPN Radio.

I had accidentally forgot to set the schedule on a couple of my posts, so these are going to look like post-dictions. But I digress, you can look at my college bowl picks and see that I picked the correct winners.

After experiencing a bad result with the only pick that I had swapped on, I’m going to keep my picks the same unless a suspension or injured player will effect the game.

Southern Miss was mildly upset that they didn’t get to go to a BCS bowl game, although we all know that they never had a chance. Had they not blown games against a marginal Marshall or a horrible UAB team, maybe they had a legitimate gripe.

That being said, this is a good football team. They won a game on the road against a good Virginia and beat up against the good teams in Conference USA. That means that Nevada should not have much of a chance in this game.

However, Nevada is a good squad as well. Most of their losses came against good teams. Some of these games were close and some were blowouts. But, Southern Miss better take this game seriously. If they don’t, Nevada can and will beat them.

Offensively, both teams are in the top 3rd in the nation. The main difference between the two teams is that Southern Miss has the better defense.

I have this being a high scoring and close game. I do think that Southern Miss will win the game 35-34.

2010 Hawaii Bowl

Previous Bowl Results

The WAC representatives has lost the Hawaii Bowl the last three years – SMU (C-USA) beat Nevada 45-10, Notre Dame beat Hawaii 49-21, and East Carolina (C-USA) beat Boise State.

Before that, the WAC had won the Hawaii Bowl four straight times (3 games against C-USA and 1 game against the Pac-10).

Hawaii last played in the Hawaii Bowl in 2008 and lost to Notre Dame. They are 5-4 in bowl games all time and 3-2 in the Hawaii Bowl.

Tulsa last played a bowl game two years ago when Tulsa (10-3) beat the #22 Ball State Cardinals (12-1) 45-13 in the GMAC Bowl. Tulsa is 7-9 all time in bowl games.

Key WinsHawaii: Nevada 27-21, Fresno State 49-27; Tulsa: Notre Dame 28-27, Southern Miss 56-50
Key LossesHawaii: USC 49-36, Colorado 31-13, Boise State 42-7; Tulsa: East Carolina 51-49, Oklahoma St 65-28, SMU 21-18

Hawaii has taken care of business when it has come to beating up on the lesser teams that they have faced. The one big win that Hawaii had was handing Nevada their only loss of the season. A week before that, they went on the road to a good Fresno State team and beat them by three touchdowns. Like everyone else that goes to Boise St, Hawaii did not fair well on the Blue Turf.

Tulsa has a lot more close wins in conference than Hawaii does and they didn’t do particularly well against the upper echelon of Conference USA. They did go to Notre Dame and beat them, but I would attribute this to the bad timing of that game being the week of the tragedy of the student that died.

Points For/GameHawaii: 39.9; Tulsa: 39.7
Points Against/GameHawaii: 22.7; Tulsa: 29.9
Offensive Yards/GameHawaii: 497; Tulsa: 503.5

The key matchup here which is likely to determine the outcome of this game is Hawaii’s #1 passing attacking in the nation against a Tulsa defense that averages giving up 30 points a game. But Tulsa also has a very high powered offense of their own as they rank in the top 16 in the nation in both passing and rushing the ball.

However, this game may turn into a shootout and one of the two defenses will need to come up with a stop. This is where Hawaii has the edge. The Warriors defense has not allowed 30 or more points in all but two games this season.

Hawaii is going to have a big advantage at home and they do well against evenly matched teams, both this year and in previous Hawaii bowls as well.

Currently, Hawaii is a 10 1/2 point favorite over Tulsa. Just about 3/4 of the people are placing bets on Hawaii to cover. This is a game that should be very close one way or another to this line.

I think that this game is going to be a shootout. The over/under for this game is 73 and I think they could easily top that. I’m predicting that the Hawaii Warriors will win the game 52-41.

Bowl Game Review

This one was the shocker of the bowl season so far. I thought Tulsa would be able to put up some numbers, but 62 points against Hawaii in the Hawaii bowl? I ended up being dead right about the over in this game, which comfortably beat 73 points with the final score of 62-35.
