MAACO Bowl Las Vegas

Published on December 22, 2011 by   ·   2 Comments

maaco-bowl-las-vegasThe Las Vegas Bowl is sponsored this year by MAACO auto painting and is played at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. This year, the bowl game features the best non-BCS conference team in the Boise State Broncos (11-1) against the Arizona State Sun Devils (6-6), who has lost 5 of their last 6.

This matchup will take place on Thursday, December 22 at 8:00PM Eastern Time and can be viewed on ESPN or listened to on ESPN Radio. Boise State is not going to be happy playing this early in the bowl season yet again. After losing a heart-breaker to TCU at home a couple of weeks ago, they got snubbed from a BCS birth even though they were ranked 7th in the BCS. Since they did not win their conference, they did not qualify for the non-BCS conference AQ. They have been installed as the biggest favorite (14 1/2 points) of any of the bowl games this year.

This bowl game was first played in 1992 when the California Raisin Bowl was moved to Las Vegas. The game originally featured the champions of the Mid-American and Big West conference. The game now features the top selection from the the Mountain West Conference against a Pac 12 Team.

RecordsBoise St: 11-1; Arizona St: 6-6
Key WinsBoise St: Georgia 35-21, SDSU 52-35; Arizona St: Missouri 37-30, USC 43-22
Key LossesBoise St: TCU 36-35; Arizona St: Arizona 31-27, Washington State 37-27

I don’t think there is much to say about this matchup. Boise State proved once again that they are an elite team when they went on the road and beat Georgia in the first week. Unfortunately, they did not play anyone of that caliber again, except for the lose against TCU.

To say Arizona State has been having problems lately is a massive understatement. They have lost their last 4 games in a row against supbar competition, including 2 teams that have fired their head coach. At this point, I’m thinking that the early season win over USC is a complete fluke.

The majority of the Sun Devils problems are caused on the defensive side of the ball, where they average giving up more than 30 points per game over the last 6 games. That’s going to be a huge problem against a team that averages over 43 points per game. Even if ASU finds a way to hang around offensively, it isn’t going to be enough.

Points For/GameBoise St: 43.3; Arizona St: 33.9
Points Against/GameBoise St: 18.3; Arizona St: 26.3
Offensive Yards/GameBoise St: 483.1; Arizona St: 451

Unlike last night, where I correctly picked the spread of 7 points (TCU was a 9 1/2 point favorite), I don’t think that this game is going to be much of a problem for Boise St. They already knew that the BCS bid was not likely since they lost the automatic bid against TCU. That means they are going to be motivated to prove that they can beat any BCS conference team and to send a message to their new conference next year.

The last couple of games has gone in favor of the sportsbooks. The vast majority of the people bet on favorites TCU and FIU win beat the spread. Neither team did and the books profited from 80% of the bettors losing these games.

The story is the same with Boise State. About 83% of the bettors at the sportsbooks are taking Boise State at -14 1/2 points. However, I don’t think that the story will repeat itself with 80% of the bettors losing.

I have Boise State Broncos winning this game by 16, with the final score of 37-21.

2010 MAACO Bowl

Previous Bowl Results

BYU has been a mainstay at this bowl game having played in it the last 5 years and winning 3 out of 5 contests. Since 2001, this game has featured MWC and PAC 12 teams with the Mountain West going 5-4 in the matchups.

Last year, Boise State won the 2010 Fiesta Bowl against fellow undefeated non-BCS contender TCU 17-10. They continued the longest winning streak in the nation and just had it snapped two games ago in a game that Boise State will not soon forget. Nevada had an incredible comeback, but the Broncos had a desperation Hail Mary answered with seconds left on the clock and set up for a game winning field goal. The kicker botched a pair of short field goals that cost the Broncos the game in overtime.

Utah also won their bowl game last year in the Poinsettia Bowl against California 37-27. The Utes were 9-3 entering the game against the 8-4 Golden Bears. Utah does have a very impressive bowl record of 13-3, but this probably won’t matter much against the high-powered Boise State team that ran through everyone else on their schedule.

Las Vegas Bowl Breakdown

RecordsBoise St: 11-1; Utah: 10-2
All Time Bowl RecordBoise St: 6-4; Utah: 13-3
Key WinsBoise St: Virginia Tech 33-30, Oregon St 37-24, Hawaii 42-7; Utah: Pittsburgh 27-24, Air Force 28-23, San Diego St 38-34
Key LossesBoise St: Nevada 34-31; Utah: TCU 47-7, Notre Dame 28-3

Boise State has the better non-conference schedule and has better and more impressive wins overall. The games that Utah has played against tough opponents have either been close wins or bad losses.

I’m not trying to diminish what Utah has accomplished this year, but they are about to run into a buzz saw in an angry Broncos team that wants everyone to know that they are not a fluke this or any other year.

Points For/GameBoise St: 46.7; Utah: 35.6
Points Against/GameBoise St: 13.6; Utah: 19.8
Offensive Yards/GameBoise St: 519.5; Utah: 405

For Utah to win this game, they have to get out to a lead early and hold on. Unless Boise State is completely deflated from not getting a BCS Bowl bid, I don’t see this happening.

This is not going to come as a big shock, but I am going to pick the Broncos to win by a couple of touchdowns. However, since 85% of the sports betting country is picking Boise St to beat the 17 point spread, I think that Utah will be a backdoor cover and the final score will be 42-28.

You can still participate in several different bowl game contests like the one shown at One of the features that I like is the promotion where you pay $25 to enter and can win $100,000 if you pick 13 straight point spread bowl winners.

Bowl Game Review

That’s more like it. Back on the winning track. This game wasn’t too difficult to predict. The only thing that surprised me was Utah’s total lack of offense. Boise State beat Utah by the score of 26-3 to win the MAACO Bowl.
