Military Bowl – Northrop Grumman

military-bowl-logoThe Military Bowl is presented by Northrop Grumman; it says so right in the name of the bowl. This is only the forth time that this bowl game will be played. It was first called the EagleBank Bowl and is played at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C.

This bowl game features a match up between teams from the MAC and Mountain West Conference. This year’s matchup features the Air Force Falcons (7-5) against the Toledo Rockets (8-4). Kickoff for this game will be on Wednesday, December 28 at 4:30PM ET. This game can be watched on ESPN and listened to on ESPN Radio.

I originally was questioning myself for selecting a lot of Mid-American Conference teams as winners for these bowl games. So far, they have played very well as a conference going 2-1. While Western Michigan did lose yesterday, they still had a chance to come back late until Purdue came up with a final turnover. Multiple turnovers will kill any team.

Toledo is currently a 3 point favorite and about 70% of the bettors are taking the Rockets. That always causes me to worry a little bit. These teams have two of the highest scoring offenses in the nation. Combine that with 2 average to bad defenses and this will be a high scoring game.

The main thing that I have against Air Force is that they were 0-5 against division 1 teams with a winning record. Many of these games were not close. The 5 division 1 teams that they did beat had a combined 14 wins. Their two biggest wins were against both of their rivals, Navy and Army. Neither of these teams were very good either.

Toledo had a chance to be the first Ohio team to be Ohio State is 80 years, but fell just short. They rolled through most of the MAC and also had some very wild games. In back-to-back weeks, they lost 63-60 and won 66-63 without going to overtime either game.

Points For/GameAir Force: 34.4; Toledo: 42.3
Points Against/GameAir Force: 27.3; Toledo: 30.9
Offensive Yards/GameAir Force: 458.8; Toledo: 493.2

When you think of Air Force, you think of a running game right? Well, that is all you will see from the Falcons all day long. They have the #2 rushing game and are near the bottom of the nation in passing.

Toledo, on the other hand, is very balanced running and passing. That combines to make them 8th in the country with 42.3 point scored per game. The advantage Toledo is going to have is that they won’t be out of the game, even if they are down 21 points. This is because they can score points in bunches. Air Force will be in trouble if they get down big and have to throw the ball.

I told you that I have this being a high scoring game. If I bet on the Over/Under, I would think that this game will easily beat the 69 1/2 points for the Over. I have Toledo winning a shootout by the score of 54-47.

Previous Bowl Results

The only ACC or Conference USA team to play in this bowl game was Wake Forest, who won the inaugural bowl game against Navy. UCLA beat Temple last year 30-21.

Maryland did not play in a bowl game last year; but they won the 2008 Humanitarian Bowl against the Nevada Wolfpack 42-35. Both teams were 7-5 entering the game.

East Carolina lost last year to Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl 20-17. This is a team that has surprised better teams before in bowl games and may best be remembered for their epic shootout losing to Marshall 64-61 in the 2001 GMAC bowl.

All Time Bowl RecordMaryland: 10-11-2; East Carolina: 5-6
Key WinsMaryland: Navy 17-14, NC State 38-31; East Carolina: Tulsa 51-49, NC State 33-27
Key LossesMaryland: West Virginia 31-17, Clemson 31-7, FSU 30-16; East Carolina: Navy 76-35, Virginia Tech 49-27, North Carolina 42-17, Rice 62-38

Maryland should have some bad karma coming their way for the way they are getting rid of their coach after he won the ACC coach of the year award. I mean, you are Maryland and not Miami or Florida State, right?

That being said, the major red flag against the Pirates are all of the blowout losses that they have suffered. They have lost 4 of their last 5 games and got demolished by Navy at home and lowly Rice on the road.

Points For/GameMaryland: 30.7; East Carolina: 38.2
Points Against/GameMaryland: 22.3; East Carolina: 43.4
Offensive Yards/GameMaryland: 342.5; East Carolina: 445.5

I’m going to call the Pirates the Michigan Wolverines of Conference USA. Great offense, horrible defense. In fact their defense is even worse then Michigan’s. If Maryland put up 38 points against NC State, they should have at least 50 on the board against East Carolina.

It’s not that Maryland is that great of a team. But you can’t hide a terrible defense unless you can run the ball and keep the clock moving, which ECU can’t do. All of their offense tends to come through the air.

I don’t think that this game should be close. This is going to be Ralph Friedgen’s last game and the players are going to want to send him off with a win.

Since East Carolina has 40 or more points 9 times in 12 games, they shouldn’t have a chance of making this closer than a two TD game. That is why I’m predicting that Maryland will win the Military Bowl by the score of 54-37.

Bowl Game Review

Another game that wasn’t too hard for me to predict. How did you like the call that Maryland would go over 50 points? East Carolina still couldn’t find a defense and lost the Military Bowl 51-20 to the Terrapins.
