new-orleans-bowl-logoThe New Orleans bowl is the third and final bowl game for the first day of the 2011 bowl season. This game is played annually at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans.

The New Orleans Bowl was first played in 2001. This bowl game features a team from Mountain West Conference and a team from the Sunbelt Conference. This year’s matchup will be between the San Diego State Aztecs (8-4) vs the Louisiana Lafayette Ragin Cajuns (8-4).

Kickoff for the New Orleans Bowl will be 9PM ET on Saturday, December 17. The game can be watched on TV on ESPN and on the radio on ESPN Radio.

2011 New Orleans Bowl

The Sunbelt Conference has played in every New Orleans Bowl since the bowl game began in 2001. The conference is a respectable 5-5 in these games. This is the Mountain West Conference’s first time in this bowl game which usually went to a Conference USA team.

San Diego State looks like the better team on paper. Of course the game isn’t played on paper, but a lot of times the matchups will dictate which team will win. This will be better shown in the following statistics:

RecordsSDSU: 8-4; La Lafayette: 8-4
Key WinsSDSU: Washington State 42-24, Air Force 41-27;
La Lafayette: FIU 36-31, FAU – 37-34
Key LossesSDSU: Michigan 28-7, TCU 27-14, Boise St 52-35;
La Lafayette: Oklahoma State 61-34, Arizona 45-37

Right off the bat, what this tells me is that San Diego State plays better against good teams. San Diego State often got into their own way with turnovers and bad plays that cost them against the 3 key losses I have listed.

Meanwhile, I was being generous by listing the Florida International game that they won on the road 36-31. That was what I deemed to be the Ragin Cajuns best win. I listed the Florida Atlantic win as a negative. They barely won at home against a team that was 0-8 in conference and gave up 34 points to one of the worst offenses in the nation. That is one of three games that FAU scored more than 17 points.

Points For/GameSDSU: 29.8; La Lafayette: 32.3
Points Against/GameSDSU: 24.4; La Lafayette: 29.8
Offensive Yards/GameSDSU: 423; La Lafayette: 380

One of the big difference in this game is going to be in the running game. San Diego State is one of the better rushing teams at almost 200 yard per game; meanwhile La Lafayette is in the bottom 3rd of the nation in rushing attack.

The other key matchup is going to be SDSU’s offense matched up against the Ragin Cajun’s defense. La Lafayette is in the bottom 3rd of the nation in total defense. This isn’t good when all of the +.500 teams that they played scored more than 30 points.

I am not going to change my prediction of SDSU 31-28. Even though I think that the Aztecs are the better team, they have to travel across the country to play in New Orleans against a team from Louisiana. This makes the New Orleans Bowl pretty much a home game for the Ragin Cajuns (La Lafayette is 5-0 at home).

However, I still believe that San Diego State is the better team and will win a close game.

2010 New Orleans Bowl

The Sun Belt Conference is 4-5 in the New Orleans Bowl. The Mid-American Conference has never played in this bowl game.
Last year’s game featured Middle Tennessee beating Southern Miss 42-32.

The last time that the Ohio Bobcats have played in a bowl game was two year ago when they lost the Little Caesar’s Bowl 21-17 against Marshall. Ohio is 0-4 all time in bowl games.

Troy also missed a bowl game last year and last played in a bowl game 2 years ago, losing to Central Michigan 44-41 at the GMAC Bowl. Troy is 1-3 all time in bowl games.

New Orleans Bowl Breakdown

RecordsTroy: 7-5; Ohio: 8-4
All Time Bowl RecordTroy: 1-3; Ohio: 0-4
Key WinsTroy: Middle Tennessee 42-13; Ohio: Temple 31-23, Miami Ohio 34-13
Key LossesTroy: South Carolina 69-24, FIU 52-35, Oklahoma State 41-38; Ohio: Kent State 28-6, Ohio State 43-7

This bowl game’s line start at a pick’em but has now steadily climbed to Troy favored by 3 points. As far as I can tell, this is because more people are betting on Troy to win the game and the sportsbooks are adjusting the line because of this.

Ohio was on a run of 7 straight wins before they got upset by the 4-7 Kent State Golden Flashes 28-6. That game lost Ohio a chance at the MAC Championship game. Ohio’s defense is 34th in the country and is one of their strong points.

Troy will probably have an advantage at New Orleans because their school is located in Alabama. I’m guessing that they will travel better to this game than Ohio University. Troy’s defense may be its liability as they give up more than 10 points a game more than the Bobcats do.

Points For/GameTroy: 32.9; Ohio: 28.0
Points Against/GameTroy: 31.0; Ohio: 21.8
Offensive Yards/GameTroy: 441; Ohio: 327

Because Troy has been to this bowl game and won before and are closer to New Orleans, I’m going to give them the edge in this game. Other than that, this game is pretty much a pick’em game and you won’t be wrong to select either team.

Final score prediction – Troy 31 – Ohio 27

Bowl Game Review

Troy won the New Orleans Bowl over Ohio by the score of 48-21. Ohio never looked like it was comfortable playing as Troy ran out to a 38-7 halftime lead.
