New Era Pinstripe Bowl

Published on December 30, 2011 by   ·   No Comments

pinstripe-bowl-logoThe Pinstripe Bowl is a new bowl game in its second year and it is going to be played inside of the new Yankee Stadium. New Era is the title sponsor for this bowl game that will match up the forth place team from the Big East versus the seventh selected bowl team from the Big 12.

Last year, this was the first bowl game played in New York since 1962. This year’s version of the Pinstripe Bowl will feature the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (8-4) against the Iowa State Cyclones (6-6). The game will start at 3:20PM ET on Friday, December 30 and can be viewed on ESPN or heard on ESPN Radio.

Rutgers is going to have the home field advantage as they hail from nearby Piscataway, New Jersey. If you want to know what advantage Iowa State is going to have, take a look at this Youtube video below:

How could you not want your son to be coached by this guy? He has a similar celebration speech after they beat Nebraska 2 years ago.

Iowa State played an absolutely brutal schedule this year. The fact that they are 6-6 and made a bowl game is amazing. They played 7 ranked teams this year. They had huge wins at Texas Tech and game Oklahoma State their only loss of the year. All but 1 of their wins were by 7 points or less and 2 of these games went to overtime.

Rutgers is going to make this a low scoring game, something that the Cyclones are already going to be used to with an offense that scores just over 23 points a game. Rutgers participated in what had to be the lowest scoring 2OT game in college football history as they beat Syracuse 19-16. They followed that up with a 20-17 OT game against South Florida.

Iowa State’s style would actually make them fit in quite well with the Big East. This style of football is all about field position and field goals. That means if you really liked the Baylor vs Washington game last night, you probably aren’t going to like this game too much.

Here is another matchup where either team can win. Without knowing the final score of the BYU vs Tulsa game, the favorite has won the bowl game the last 10 matchups in a row.

The favorite in this game is Iowa State by 1 point. This is probably because people perceive the Big East as an inferior conference to the Big 12. I have the home field advantage working for Rutgers as it did for Syracuse last year.

I am predicting that Rutgers will win the Pinstripe bowl by the final score of 17-14.

Previous Bowl Results

There isn’t much to report here from any angle. Since this is the inaugural bowl there has been no prior games played. Also, neither team has made a bowl game in a number of years.

The last game that Kansas State played in was the 2006 Texas Bowl (also inaugural game), which they lost 37-10 against another Big East team, Rutgers.

The last game that Syracuse has played in was the 2004 Champs Sports Bowl, which they lost in the biggest blowout for them since overall since 1953. The score of the game was 51-14 against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Both teams were 6-5 headed into the game.

Pinstripe Bowl Breakdown

RecordsSyracuse: 7-5; K-State: 7-5
All Time Bowl RecordSyracuse: 12-9-1; K-State: 6-7
Key WinsSyracuse: West Virginia 19-14, South Florida 13-9; K-State: UCF 17-13, Texas 39-14
Key LossesSyracuse: Washington 41-20, Pittsburgh 45-14, UConn 23-6; K-State: Nebraska 48-13, Missouri 38-28, Oklahoma State 24-14

This is going to be the clash of two completely different styles of conference play meeting in the Pinstripe Bowl. The Big 12 is known for high scoring games and lots of yardage, whereas the Big East is known for low scoring and grinding defensive games with little yardage.

Neither team really has an edge in their schedule although the most impressive game that either team won was Syracuse going to WVU and escaping with a 19-14 win.

Syracuse did lose 3 of 4 to end the season with a three losses coming at home. Kansas State has gone 3-5 since starting out 4-0 and have only beating the hapless Jayhawks and North Texas and the hopeless (for this year) Longhorns.

Points For/GameSyracuse: 21.0; K-State: 33.6
Points Against/GameSyracuse: 18.1; K-State: 28.5
Offensive Yards/GameSyracuse: 379; K-State: 338

Syracuse is in the lowest quarter of the country in both passing and rushing yards. Their only saving grace is their 13th ranked defense, which gives up less then 20 points per game.

Kansas State biggest strength is their 20th ranked running game, which makes up for their anemic passing game. Their defense has not been anything to particularly write home about.

Syracuse is currently a one point favorite because they are pretty much the home team in this matchup. But, home games were not very favorable to them to end the season.

This is one of my least confident picks, because I honestly don’t know which team is going to show up or how the game will play out. I’m going to go out on a limb and choose Kansas State to win 21-13.

Bowl Game Result

Kansas State got bit by a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty on a TD with a little more than a minute left that gave them a 17-yard two point conversion attempt, which failed. Syracuse did appear to be the better team in the second half, but this costly penalty was the difference in the game.
