Hyundai Sun Bowl

sun-bowl-logoThe Sun Bowl is tied with the Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl as the second oldest bowl game, only behind the Rose Bowl. Played at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso, Texas, the game features a matchup of Pac-12 and ACC teams. This season, the Utah Utes (7-5) will face off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (8-4).

This is one of the few games that will not be on the ESPN family of networks. CBS Sports has shown the Sun Bowl every year since 1968.

The Sun Bowl started in 1934 when players from a local high school made up an All-Star team and they played against another top opponent. It didn’t become a college bowl game until two years later. Since the 1980’s there have been a total of six different sponsors for the Sun Bowl, most recently Brut. Hyundai took over this year and will remain the sponsor at least until 2014.

For several years, the Sun Bowl featured a Pac-10 team vs a Big 10 team, but recent years have seen bids accepted from the Big 12 and Big East and the bowl game is now affiliated with the ACC conference. The bowl’s agreement with conference ties gives them the 3rd selection from the Pac-12 and the third selection from the ACC.

Georgia Tech comes into the Sun Bowl losing 4 of their last 6 games. The lone bright spot in this stretch was when they handed Clemson their first loss of the season. They haven’t really blown out any team as they prefer to run the ball all game long. They are the #2 ranked running team in the nation with more than 315 yards per game.

Utah comes into the Sun Bowl on a down note. They lost their last game of the season to the lowly Colorado Buffaloes. This prevented them from making the Pac-12 championship game in the sub-par Pac-12 South. The Utes started off the season really rough by losing their first 4 conference games before putting a string of wins together near the end.

In order for Utah to win this game, their 19th ranked defense must stop Georgia Tech’s running game. If Georgia Tech wants to win this game, they cannot fall behind early because they do not have the passing game to make up a 3 possession deficit.

The really poor loss to Colorado is going to haunt Utah in their first season in the Pac-12. I see Georgia Tech winning this game by the final score of 35-27.

Previous Bowl Results

Neither of these two teams have ever played in the Sun Bowl before. This will also be the ACC’s first appearance at the Sun Bowl as a conference. Last year saw an exciting game as Oklahoma played to a thrilling 31-27 victory.

Notre Dame did not play in a bowl game last year. The last bowl game that they played in was the 2008 Hawaii Bowl, which Notre Dame (6-6) won handily over the home team Hawaii Warriors (7-6) by the score of 49-21.

Notre Dame used to have a tradition that they would not accept an offer to any lesser bowl game. This is why they have played in less bowl games then some of their counterparts like Michigan or Alabama have. They are 1 game under .500 all time at 14-15.

Miami (9-3) played in the Champs Sports bowl last year against the Wisconsin Badgers (9-3) and lost 20-14. Miami has played as well in bowl games since their most recent glory days in the early 2000’s. But, that being said they still have a record of 18-15 in bowl games.

Sun Bowl Breakdown

RecordsNotre Dame: 7-5; Miami: 7-5
All Time Bowl RecordNotre Dame: 14-15; Miami: 18-15
Key WinsNotre Dame: USC 20-16, Utah 28-3, Boston College 31-13; Miami: Pittsburgh 31-3, Georgia Tech 35-10, North Carolina 33-10
Key LossesNotre Dame: Michigan 28-24, Stanford 37-14, Navy 35-17; Miami: Ohio State 36-24, Florida State 45-17, Virginia 24-19

Both teams have had some ups and downs this year. Miami started off well before they got clobbered by Florida State at home. They get back on track but inexplicably lose to probably the worst ACC team, Virginia. They ended the season with two home loses against Virginia Tech and South Florida and the school has now fired the Hurricanes head coach.

Things are looking much better now at the end of the season then they had been earlier. They started out 1-3 after losing three straight games to rivals Michigan, Michigan State and Stanford. They had an embarrassing loss to Navy, then had the tragedy with the camera tower falling over only to lose at home to Tulsa in a bizarre game. They finally got things turned around in the last three games. They crushed Utah and Army and then went on the road and beat their rival USC.

Points For/GameNotre Dame: 25.8; Miami: 27.1
Points Against/GameNotre Dame: 20.5; Miami: 19.7
Offensive Yards/GameNotre Dame: 378; Miami: 422.5

These two teams are pretty even when it comes down to the numbers. Notre Dame is a little better at passing the ball; Miami is a little bit better defensively and rushing the ball.

This is the perfect kind of bowl game to try to headline – Miami vs Notre Dame. Unfortunately the names are more of the billing then the teams on the field. This game won’t have much of the hype it did when these two teams last met in 1988 (Notre Dame beat the #1 defending champions 31-30). But it still should be a fun matchup to watch.

I think that this is a story of two teams going in different directions, at least as far as this year’s bowl game is concerned. Notre Dame seems to be doing much better of late and Miami has got a ton of recent problems and a brand new coach. This means that I am going to take Notre Dame to win 21-17.

Bowl Game Results

Back on the winning track and back up to .500 on the year. This one seems fairly obvious now, as Notre Dame goes up big early and doesn’t look back, winning 33-17.
